There are many skills required for being a successful teacher like patience, good leadership, and compassion. However, those skills will only get you so far. The rest of the responsibility falls on your teaching tools. They will provide you with methods that help facilitate learning and shape their behavior in class. Whether a child is struggling in math or is interested in going beyond the curriculum in social studies, you will be prepared to assist them.
Multiply Your Math Tools
Math is a very specific skill. For some students, it comes very naturally. For others, it may be more difficult to comprehend each lesson plan. Some students may be able to solve fractions easily and might struggle more with graphs. It’s important to cater to all your students, whichever level they may be at. If you are teaching students multiplication for the first time, hang up a multiplication chart for guidance. For students that learn best by doing, or kinesthetically, there are plenty of tools that students can use to better understand math like counters, spinners and pattern blocks.
Revamp Your Reading Library
Every kid’s reading level is at a different place no matter which grade they’re in. Some students get an early start reading bedtime stories with their parents. Others have learning disabilities that make tasks like reading more difficult. It’s important to have a class library that has books for all grade levels so that students can pick a book that matches their level for independent reading. Handling books that are required by the curriculum is a different story. Group reading is a great technique for students who are stronger auditory learners opposed to learning visually.
Heighten Your History Lessons
Social studies is a very important subject for children to learn. Since history is a subject that many children, especially young ones, find to be boring, it’s important to keep it as engaging as possible. YouTube videos and movies based on historical events teach students in an engaging way. Interactive globes and maps help children remember geography facts. Another successful, engaging tool for teaching social studies is by creating stations. Each station will have a different learning tactic based on a certain topic. One station features technology or interactive notebooks. The next has group reading. Another section has topic-related games. The last is the teacher meeting station allowing teachers to work with four or five students at a time.
Step Up Science
Science is a great subject for using engaging learning tools. It can be the most interactive out of all the subjects. If you’re covering biology, use a life-sized skeleton and diagrams to identify human body parts. Hang up a chart of the periodic table of elements and the scientific method so that students can commit them to memory gradually each day. Plan experiments to test facts of science using magnets, test tubes and microscopes. Have children conduct their own science experiments using the scientific theory, make a poster stating the results and bring both the experiment and the poster into school for a science fair.
Education is most effective when provided to students in an engaging way. These tactics will allow your students to excel like they never have before.
