SM Supermalls continues its mission to make every mall visit enjoyable for all by introducing an exciting new initiative that champions inclusivity and compassion — the first-ever SM Sensory Lab, set to open soon at SM Mall of Asia.
This thoughtfully designed space, called the SM Sensory Lab: Calming Corner, aims to provide a safe and soothing environment for individuals with sensory sensitivities, including those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), sensory processing disorder (SPD), and anxiety disorder.
A Milestone for Inclusion and Accessibility
Through its corporate social responsibility arm, SM Cares, this groundbreaking project is part of SM’s long-standing advocacy for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). The goal is to ensure that everyone — regardless of sensory, physical, or emotional challenges — can experience the joy of malling in a calm and supportive setting.
The SM Sensory Lab represents a major step toward making SM malls more inclusive, welcoming, and compassionate. It will offer a peaceful retreat for those who may feel overwhelmed by bright lights, noise, and large crowds.
Collaboration with Experts and Advocates
The SM Sensory Lab is being developed in close partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA), and the Autism Society Philippines (ASP).
This collaboration highlights SM’s commitment to working hand in hand with organizations that share its vision of empathy, accessibility, and equal opportunity. Together, these partners aim to create public spaces that empower individuals with special needs and foster a stronger sense of community.
“The SM Sensory Lab represents our vision of inclusivity and care,” said Steven Tan, President of SM Supermalls. “Through this calming space, we hope to create an environment where every visitor — especially those with sensory sensitivities — feels safe, supported, and truly welcome.”
What to Expect Inside the SM Sensory Lab
Designed to reduce sensory overload, the SM Sensory Lab features:
🩵 Soft, gentle lighting to minimize visual overstimulation.
💙 A quiet and peaceful atmosphere to reduce noise triggers.
💚 Comfortable seating with soft cushions and bean bags for relaxation.
💛 Tactile tools and sensory toys that offer soothing touch-based comfort.
🩶 Visual supports and schedules to help visitors feel more in control.
Admission to the Sensory Lab will be free of charge and open to both children and adults with sensory sensitivities, accompanied by a parent, guardian, or caregiver.
Everything inside the space is carefully curated — from the lighting and textures to the layout — ensuring it remains clutter-free, calming, and emotionally supportive.
A First Step Toward Nationwide Inclusion
“SM Mall of Asia is proud to lead this effort toward more inclusive malling experiences,” added Mr. Tan. “True hospitality means creating a place where everyone — regardless of their needs — can feel comfortable and cared for.”
As the first SM Supermall to open a Sensory Lab, SM Mall of Asia is setting a positive example for other branches across the country. This initiative lays the groundwork for future Sensory Labs in other SM malls, further promoting awareness and empathy within communities.
40 Super Years of Caring for Every Filipino
As SM Supermalls celebrates its 40th anniversary, the launch of the Sensory Lab serves as a beautiful reminder of how far the brand has come — from being just a shopping destination to becoming a safe space for every kind of Filipino family.
With 89 malls nationwide, SM continues to evolve by integrating sustainability, innovation, and inclusivity into its design and operations. The SM Sensory Lab is not just a facility — it’s a symbol of care, understanding, and love for the community.
